10 Tips for Maintaining Healthy Natural Hair
Whether you're new to the natural hair journey or a seasoned pro, these practical tips will keep your curls hydrated, strong, and defined.
Natural hair is beautiful, but it requires the right care routine to thrive. Here are our top 10 tips from the stylists at El Gibbor Spa and Beauty Glam.
1. Moisturise Daily
Natural hair tends to be drier than chemically treated hair. Use the LOC method (Liquid, Oil, Cream) to lock in moisture every day.
2. Deep Condition Weekly
A weekly deep conditioning session restores moisture and protein balance. Leave the conditioner on for at least 30 minutes under a heat cap for best results.
3. Protect Your Ends
Your ends are the oldest part of your hair and most prone to breakage. Wear protective styles and trim split ends every 8–12 weeks.
4. Detangle Gently
Always detangle from the ends upward using a wide-tooth comb or your fingers. Never rip through knots — work them out section by section.
5. Sleep on Satin or Silk
Cotton pillowcases absorb moisture and cause friction. Switch to a satin pillowcase or wrap your hair in a satin bonnet at night.
6. Avoid Excessive Heat
Heat styling weakens the hair shaft over time. When you do use heat, always apply a heat protectant and keep tools below 180°C.
7. Stay Hydrated
Your hair health starts from within. Drink plenty of water and maintain a balanced diet rich in biotin, zinc, and vitamins A, C, D, and E.
8. Don't Over-Wash
Washing too frequently strips natural oils. For most natural hair types, washing once or twice a week is sufficient.
9. Co-Wash Between Washes
Co-washing (using conditioner instead of shampoo) cleanses the scalp while preserving moisture. Great for keeping curls defined between wash days.
10. Be Patient
Natural hair growth takes time. Focus on retention — keeping the hair you grow — rather than trying to speed up growth artificially.
